This castle was built by the Count of Palatine, Ludwig, and is situated on top of a rock in the middle of the Rhine River.
This castle has an unusual architectonic style and was built to resemble a ship. With adjacent military support, it could easily control who passed through the Rhine - making this castle of tremendous strategical importance.
Pfalzgrafenstein castle was used to collect customs from the boats that passed through the Rhine. It was later used for defensive purposes.
