Naval Warfare (Warfare) Naval warfare during the Middle Ages was very similar to the ancient period. The Romans had ships rowed by slaves which tried to slam each other. Medieval warfare was very similar and not much changed. Contrary to popular belief, cannons were not incorporated in ships during the Middle Ages. Even though during the Late Middle Ages cannons were already being used in castles, using cannons in ships was extremely difficult, for they were very hard to use and innaccurate.
It wasn't until the XVI century when the gunport was invented by a shipwright, Descharges, in France.
